Defining Blepharoplasty
For people who are dissatisfied with the appearance of droopy, puffy eyelids or bags beneath their eyes, blepharoplasty may be an excellent option. Blepharoplasty, also called eyelid lift or eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure in which excess skin, fat or muscle is removed from the area around the eyes. The Blepharoplasty Procedure in San Francisco
Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper or lower eyelid – or both. It is typically provided as an outpatient procedure under local or general anesthesia and takes from one to three hours. When performing surgery on the upper eyelid, the San Francisco surgeon first makes an incision along the natural crease in the eye. This incision placement helps ensure that the resulting scar is well hidden. Next, the surgeon removes excess skin and fat (and sometimes muscle) before closing the incision with very fine sutures.
To perform eyelid surgery on the lower eyelid, the surgeon makes an incision just below the eyelashes – again, a location where the scar will be less easily detected following surgery. In order to remove fat and reduce the appearance of bags under the eyes, the surgeon may make incisions inside the lower eyelids.
