Defining Blepharoplasty

For people who are dissatisfied with the appearance of droopy, puffy eyelids or bags beneath their eyes, blepharoplasty may be an excellent option. Blepharoplasty, also called eyelid lift or eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure in which excess skin, fat or muscle is removed from the area around the eyes. The procedure can be performed either by plastic surgeons or by ophthalmologists who have expertise in oculoplastics (surgery of the eyes and face). Blepharoplasty is frequently a stand-alone procedure, but can also be provided along with other treatments to bring about stunning aesthetic results. In fact, many facelift patients add blepharoplasty to their treatment package for a more complete facial rejuvenation, while others choose minimally invasive procedures such as Botox, Juvederm or Latisse.

The Blepharoplasty Procedure in San Francisco

Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper or lower eyelid – or both. It is typically provided as an outpatient procedure under local or general anesthesia and takes from one to three hours. When performing surgery on the upper eyelid, the San Francisco surgeon first makes an incision along the natural crease in the eye. This incision placement helps ensure that the resulting scar is well hidden. Next, the surgeon removes excess skin and fat (and sometimes muscle) before closing the incision with very fine sutures.

To perform eyelid surgery on the lower eyelid, the surgeon makes an incision just below the eyelashes – again, a location where the scar will be less easily detected following surgery. In order to remove fat and reduce the appearance of bags under the eyes, the surgeon may make incisions inside the lower eyelids. Your SF eyelid surgery cost will depend in part on whether you have surgery on both your upper and lower eyelids or only your upper or lower lids.

Following surgery, the patient will be instructed to keep his or her head elevated for several days, apply eye drops and take pain medication as needed. Stitches will be removed several days after the procedure, and the patient should be able to resume most activities within seven to 10 days. All swelling should subside within three weeks, at which time strenuous activities can be resumed.

San Francisco for Blepharoplasty

Each year, millions of people from around the world flock to San Francisco, including many plastic surgery patients impressed by the before and after blepharoplasty photos of the city's talented surgeons. While in town for a blepharoplasty consultation, procedure or follow up, patients enjoy the many attractions the city offers. Some visitors enjoy driving the twists and turns of Lombard Street, while others watch the fog sweep across the Golden Gate Bridge, while still others cling to the rail of a cable car as it climbs the steep hills of downtown. San Francisco is also home to numerous cultural and educational institutions, such as the California Academy of Sciences and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, whose permanent collection includes more than 26,000 works of art.
